Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice @ Katong

6 July 2015

I was going to be away from Singapore for about two weeks, so I wanted my last meal in Singapore then to be of “local” cuisine. More often than not, chicken rice will be this last meal because it is fast to both order and eat. And that was how we ended up at Katong Shopping Centre for the Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice. I have heard rave reviews from many online personalities so I know I have to try it myself.

This stall is located within a food court on the basement level of Katong Shopping Centre. Luckily, we were there before 6pm so we queued for less than 10 minutes. However, once we placed our food down, a dinner queue already started to form.

As there were 3 of us, we decided to share half a chicken which consisted of both roasted and steamed chicken, on top of the individual rice portion. I cannot remember the exact price, but we paid less than S$20 for all those. We also received 2 bowls of complimentary homemade soups: lotus root with chicken feet soup and cabbage soup (the soups are refillable!). In addition, there was the free self-service achar (which I don’t really fancy) beside the sauces: chili sauce, ginger and dark soya sauce.

Despite the name, the chicken meat was unfortunately not boneless. Good thing was that it was cut into thick pieces. It was mounted on a bed of cucumber slices and topped with fried garlic bits, spring onion, julienned carrots and sliced chili, making the plate extra colourful.

The roasted chicken had nice crispy skin; however I remember the meat to be more on the dry side. I thought the steamed chicken fared better with its more tender meat. The sauce that came with the chicken was very savoury (and salty); it tasted especially good with the cucumber slices. Unfortunately, the rice was not to my liking, it was quite dry and hard.

I think the highlight of this stall was the refillable homemade soup! They were very generous with the ingredients in the soup; there were many thickly-sliced lotus roots, peanuts, chicken feet and even pork ribs! The peanuts may be too soft but that was a sign that the soup has been cooked for a very long time; the chicken meat even came off the bones easily. The cabbage soup was equally filled with cabbage too!

All in all, the chicken rice was quite decent and value-for-money, especially because of the free-flow soups. But I don’t think this chicken rice is worth, from what I read online, the 45-minute queue! 10 minutes of queueing is still acceptable. Honestly speaking, I enjoyed the soups more than the chicken rice itself. Both E and S also thought that there were more misses than hits here.

P.S. Unfortunately, I think they put lots of MSG in their food as I was feeling thirsty from dinner time all the way till my flight time which was at 11pm!
